CIEH Accredited Principles of Manual Handling
This 1/2-day CIEH Accredited course is designed to complement the CIEH Basic Health & Safety programme, is aimed at those who carry out manual handling activities at work and introduces students to the hazards of manual handling, the risks and controls available and what to expect from a manual handling assessment.
Basic
1/2-1-day course designed for new or first level staff. These courses focus on the basic information and skills necessary to protect staff and patients/service users during moving and handling procedures. The course covers the causes of musculoskeletal injuries, current safety legislation, basic principles and practical techniques which can be used in every day situations.
Intermediate
2-day course for Supervisory or Senior Staff. This course looks more in depth at the legal frame work associated with safe handling, assessing every day manual handling risks, record keeping and practical techniques which can be used for low to moderate risk catagory situations. A wide range of manual handling equipment will be used for practical teaching of this course: hoisting is optional.
Advanced
3-day course for Senior Staff, Managers and those responsible for managing safe handling practices. The course is designed to prepare staff to manage moving and handling in their workplace. Focusing on the legal requirements associated with management and risk assessment, the course moves on to look at complex practical problem solving techniques.
Safe Hoisting
1/2-1-day practical course concentrating on Safe Hoisting practices. Every year serious accidents and fatalities occur due to poor hoisting techniques being adopted. Our practical hoisting courses are designed to ensure staff understand and practice safe hoisting procedures in their workplace. Including hoist maintenance, sling application, sling sizing and selecting an appropriate sling for the patient/service user. All delegates are required to take an active part in being hoisted themselves.
Trainer Course
5-day course for Senior Staff and Managers wishing to teach manual handling in their own workplace. Includes registration with the National Back Exchange. This is an intensive theoretical and practical course designed to prepare the delegate to train others in safe handling practice. The course looks at the legal framework and risk assessment associated with moving and handling, spinal and musculoskeletal injuries caused through poor manual handling, addressing a wide range of practical problem solving scenarios, the principles of safe handling and practical teaching techniques.
Course evaluation is via exam, practical micro-teach project and continual assessment. Delegates are required to have previous people handling experience.

Workshops
1/2-1-day practical workshops designed to develop exisiting practical skills using a wide range of manual handling equipment. These days are designed to be highly interactive and fun. They may focus on specific requirements, or generic moving and handling situations.
Paediatrics
All of the above may be adapted for Paediatric staff. The rules surrounding the handling of children differ slightly from adult handling. ARC Learning Ltd paediatric courses focus on practical every day situations in the nursery, paediatric ward or home environmet etc.
Operating Department Personel
Our 1-day course specifically designed for staff working in Operating Theatres, covering a wide variety of patient and object handling situations. Run in-house only.
Moving & Handling in Midwifery
These courses are designed to address moving and handling situations encountered by midwives. Focusing on the legal frame work associated with safe handling practices, risk assessment in clinics and delivery suites, home births, emergency situations and assisting a new mother to breast feed. This is a practical course which may be run over 1/2, 1 or 2 days and is led by a qualified and experienced midwife.
All Wales Passport Scheme
This modular scheme can be delivered in a number of ways to best meet the needs of the staff. A distance learning package is available for Module A of the scheme. The course is designed to meet the needs of the staff and organisation and may take place as a single block course, or delivered in seperate individual modules.
