Michael Cowan-Jones, DipCOT, SROT, MInstLM, HPC Registered Occupational Therapist
Qualified in 1991, experience includes care of the elderly, orthopaedics/rheumatology, neurology, cancer, sensory impairments, learning difficulties, and affective disorders (including bereavement). Interventions include adaptations, re-housing, establishing care packages, and advising on equipment and alternative methods of performing activities of daily living. The aims: promotion of independence and/or safer practice for care givers.
Mike helped establish (a) the occupational therapy service at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospitals "Accident and Emergency Department" and (b) a NHS community occupational therapy service working with general practioners, a hospice and a day centre. He has worked for the NHS wheelchair and tissue viability service.
From 1999 to 2002, Mike was the head OT and assistant manager at the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust's rehabilitation unit in Birmingham addressing perceptual, cognitive, behavioural and physical rehabilitation. He had management responsibility for one half of the unit.
Mike also provides vocational services and is a qualified manual handling trainer/risk assessor with membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists, the National Association of Neurological Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy in Private Practice, and the National Back Exchange. Other experience includes Expert Witness work and independent advice to insurance companies. He represents the College of Occupational Therapists at the National Patient Safety Agency.
Mike teaches at Birmingham City University and Bourneville College, Birmingham and has presented seminars and papers at Naidex and at the National Back Exchange Conference. He regularly contributes to the training of his peers via the West Midlands Back Exchange.
